A. E. Rayne is a bestselling New Zealand fantasy author whose Viking-inspired sagas have captivated readers around the world. Known for her immersive world-building, emotionally complex characters, and relentless plot twists, Rayne has established herself as a distinctive voice in epic fantasy, crafting tales of warring kingdoms, fearless warriors, and mysterious dreamers that keep readers turning pages long into the night.

Born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, with a few formative years spent in England, Rayne knew from the age of eight that she wanted to be a writer. She completed a Bachelor of Communication Studies with a major in television before training as a graphic designer, all while filling ring binders with story concepts, screenplays, and novel ideas. Her love of historical and fantasy fiction - particularly anything involving Vikings - runs deep, with favourite authors including Bernard Cornwell, Giles Kristian, Robert Low, and Diana Gabaldon. This passion for Norse-influenced storytelling would come to define her own writing.

Rayne made her debut as a novelist in 2017 with Winter's Fury, the opening instalment of The Furyck Saga. The series introduces readers to Jael Furyck, a strong female protagonist and legendary warrior of the kingdom of Brekka, who finds herself married off to Eadmund Skalleson, a prince of the Slave Islands she once defeated in battle. Set in a Norse-inspired fantasy world called Osterland, the series weaves together themes of political intrigue, forbidden romance, and ancient prophecy, with mysterious dreamers who receive visions of the future playing a crucial role in the unfolding narrative. The Furyck Saga spans six books - Winter's Fury, The Burning Sea, Night of the Shadow Moon, Hallow Wood, The Raven's Warning, and Vale of the Gods - alongside a prequel novella, Kings of Fate.

In 2020, Rayne launched The Lords of Alekka, a companion series set in the same world. Beginning with Eye of the Wolf, this six-book saga follows Alys de Sant, a woman escaping an abusive marriage with her two children, and Reinar Vilander, a lord desperately trying to shore up his failing fortress as the kingdom teeters on the brink of war. When Reinar captures Alys, her mysterious gifts as a dreamer become entangled with the fate of an entire kingdom. The series - continuing through Mark of the Hunter, Blood of the Raven, Heart of the King, Fury of the Queen, and Wrath of the Sun - delivers the same blend of swords, sorcery, and searing emotional stakes that made The Furyck Saga so beloved.

Rayne returned to her original characters in 2023 with Fate of the Furycks, a continuation series that picks up four years after the events of The Furyck Saga. Beginning with The Shadow Isle, the series sees Jael Furyck drawn back into conflict when dreamers begin disappearing and her grandmother goes missing. With enemies masked in shadows targeting her entire family, Jael must fight to protect everyone she loves. The series continues with Tower of Blood and Flame, Home of the Hunted, Goddess of Secrets and War, and The Witches of Al'athea.

What distinguishes Rayne's writing is her gift for creating characters who feel like friends and villains who inspire genuine fury. Her protagonists - particularly her badass heroines like Jael and Alys - navigate impossible choices with strength and vulnerability in equal measure. Readers consistently praise her ability to develop intricate character dynamics, portraying flaws and growth in ways that feel authentically human. Her romances burn slowly but intensely, often tangled with questions of duty, survival, and love versus loyalty.

Rayne's world-building draws heavily on Scandinavian geography and culture, creating fictional kingdoms like Brekka, Oss, and Alekka that feel grounded in a harsh, wintry reality while incorporating magical elements - particularly her dreamers, whose prophetic visions drive much of the narrative tension. Her plots twist and turn relentlessly, filled with betrayals, battles, and moments of hard-won triumph. Themes of family legacy, redemption, survival and resilience, and the weight of destiny run throughout her work.

She lives in Auckland, New Zealand, with her husband and three children. Her Swedish grandmother's Viking heritage remains a proud influence on her storytelling, and she confesses to an abiding love of snow - despite Auckland's persistent lack of it.
