Fate of the Furycks

Fate of the Furycks by A. E. Rayne continues Jael Furyck's story four years after The Furyck Saga, as a shadowy enemy emerges to destroy her entire family through dreamers, dark magic, and deadly secrets.

Fate of the Furycks is A. E. Rayne's sequel series to The Furyck Saga, returning readers to the world of Osterland four years after the explosive conclusion of Vale of the Gods. Beginning in 2023 with The Shadow Isle, this ongoing epic fantasy series follows Jael Furyck as she faces a new enemy determined to destroy her entire family - every last one of them.

The series picks up with Jael reunited with her husband Eadmund after the epic battle in Alekka depicted in The Lords of Alekka. She wants nothing more than to return to her island kingdom and start again, to finally enjoy the peace she has fought for across so many years of war and sacrifice. But when she stops in Andala to collect her children, a dream shatters her hopes: a horrifying vision of the future showing her brothers dead, her daughter gone, even herself - all of the Furycks destroyed. The family legacy that has defined her identity now marks her for death.

Seeking urgent advice from her grandmother Edela - the legendary dreamer whose visions have guided Jael since childhood - she discovers that Edela has mysteriously disappeared in Tuura. The strong female protagonist who has never backed down from a fight now faces an enemy she cannot see, cannot find, and cannot defeat with a sword. As her dreams become nightmares threatening everyone she loves, Jael does what she knows best: she fights. Until she is caught in a web of danger and intrigue herself, torn away from everything and everyone she knows.

The series weaves dangerous magic and dark secrets through its narrative, with dreamers playing an even more central role than in the original saga. Someone is hunting dreamers across Osterland, killing them systematically, and the reason ties into mysteries that have been buried for generations. The ancient prophecy that shaped The Furyck Saga gives way to new revelations about the nature of dreamer magic, the history of the kingdoms, and the true scope of the threat facing not just the Furycks but every kingdom of gods and men.

Books in Fate of the Furycks

The Shadow Isle (2023) is the first book in the Fate of the Furycks series. Four years of peace are shattered when Jael Furyck returns to the Kingdom of Brekka. Dreamers are being killed, and her grandmother - the most famous one of all - is missing. In the South, rebellion stirs while her brother the king is distracted by his ailing wife and lack of heirs. Seeing no help coming from him, Jael embarks on a journey to find Edela - a journey that will soon see her lost to everyone she loves. Born into the powerful Furyck dynasty, trained to kill since she was ten years old, Jael has never backed down from a fight. But when she is captured, stripped of her weapons and her crown, and taken far from Osterland, she must find new ways to overcome her enemies.

Tower of Blood and Flame (2023) is the second book in the Fate of the Furycks series. Someone is seeking to destroy the Furycks, but who? As Axl works on strengthening Brekka's defences, he discovers he has more enemies than he realised. Help arrives in the form of a dreamer, though he doesn't know the woman - so how can he trust her? After a disastrous time on the island of Aggralaia, Edela finds a new ally just in time. With his help, she travels to the Fire Lands, once again forced to flee for her life. Hunted by determined Siluran warriors, she must make a stand to free herself of her pursuers once and for all. And Jael comes face to face with her true enemy - vulnerable and weak, with little she can do to stop the man from achieving his goal.

Home of the Hunted (2024) is the third book in the Fate of the Furycks series. Andala is under attack! The king and his warriors are on alert, but their enemy is playing games, not revealing who has come or why. Jael fears for her brother, sensing that something is wrong, desperate to leave S'ala Nis behind and help him. In Castala, Raymon Vandaal is injured, and Edela remains in shock. Though her journey must continue, the only question is to where? And in Hallow Wood, a dreamer works her magic, conjuring up a surprise that will bring them all to their knees.

Goddess of Secrets and War (2024) is the fourth book in the Fate of the Furycks series. After the explosive events in Andala, everything will change. All that was settled must be remade; every path that appeared certain is now darkened with shadow. Oren Storgard is gone, Mutt Storman has vanished, and Gunnhild the dreamer? Surrounded by enemies, uncertain who will strike next, Jael must choose a way forward - though can she find the strength to overcome her broken heart? The resolve to keep fighting? In Kadak, Edela has a choice: to rescue her companions or to save herself. But in her weakened state, how can she face the Mistress alone?

The Witches of Al'athea (2025) is the fifth book in the Fate of the Furycks series. As the threat of the livahti grows and her enemies regroup, Jael Furyck knows she cannot stop. Escaping Hallow Wood at the head of the Brekkan army, she must find her way to Oss. Her chilling encounter with the Mistress leaves her in no doubt about the dangers facing Eadmund and everyone she loves. She must find a way to escape the island of Al'athea - and stop the darkness from consuming everything.

Fate of the Furycks expands the world of Osterland significantly, taking readers to new locations like S'ala Nis, the Fire Lands, Aggralaia, Kadak, and the mysterious island of Al'athea. The series introduces new enemies - the Siluran warriors, the enigmatic Mistress, and forces tied to the livahti - while bringing back beloved characters from both The Furyck Saga and The Lords of Alekka.

Rayne's signature multiple POV structure returns, cutting between Jael's imprisonment and escape attempts, Edela's desperate journey, Axl's defence of Brekka, and the machinations of enemies working from the shadows. The high-stakes survival threading through every storyline creates relentless tension, with characters facing mortal danger across multiple fronts.

The series maintains the morally grey characters and emotional complexity that defined Rayne's earlier work while introducing new mysteries and raising the stakes to kingdom-shattering levels. Readers who loved The Furyck Saga will find everything they treasured - the fierce protagonist, the relentless plotting, the emotional resonance - alongside fresh challenges and revelations that deepen the mythology of Osterland.
