Winter's Fury by A. E. Rayne launches The Furyck Saga with warrior Jael Furyck, forced into marriage with a broken prince as ancient darkness stirs and dreamers warn of horrors to come.
Winter's Fury by A. E. Rayne is the 2017 first instalment in The Furyck Saga, an epic fantasy series set in a world of warring kingdoms, fearless warriors, and mysterious dreamers. This opening volume introduces readers to one of the most compelling strong female protagonists in modern Norse-inspired fantasy: Jael Furyck, Brekka's greatest warrior and the woman who should have been queen.
Jael Furyck has had a sword in her hand since she was ten years old. Trained to fight, destined to rule, she was everything her father needed in an heir - until his death put her scheming uncle Lothar on the throne. Now Lothar sees Jael as a threat to be removed, and he has found the perfect solution: marry her off to his former enemy's broken son, forging an alliance that fills his coffers with gold while sending Brekka's most dangerous warrior far from his newly stolen kingdom.
Eadmund Skalleson was once a renowned warrior, but grief over his wife's death has sent him spiralling into an ale-soaked despair. His father, King Eirik of the Slave Islands, has run out of patience. The king needs his son to become the heir his kingdom requires, and a powerful wife might be exactly what Eadmund needs - whether he wants one or not. The forced proximity of their arranged marriage sets up an enemies to lovers dynamic that crackles with tension; Jael once defeated Eadmund in battle, and neither of them wants this union forced upon them by scheming fathers and political convenience.
But there are forces at work beyond the ambitions of kings. Jael's grandmother Edela is a Tuuran dreamer, gifted with visions of the future, and what she sees terrifies her. An old, evil darkness is stalking her granddaughter - a girl with a scorched face and an ominous voice haunts her dreams, warning of horrors to come. Edela must race to Tuura with the help of Aleksander, Jael's former lover, to uncover the answers to her mysterious visions before it's too late. But the Tuurans guard their secrets closely, and the truth about Jael Furyck and her importance to all the kingdoms of Osterland is their most closely guarded secret of all.
The world Rayne builds draws heavily on Scandinavian geography and culture, creating fictional kingdoms that feel grounded in a harsh, wintry reality. Brekka, Oss, Hest - these are lands where loyalty is earned with blood and kings rise and fall on the strength of their swords. The magic system centres on dreamers, individuals who receive prophetic visions that shape the fate of nations. This ancient prophecy element drives much of the narrative tension, as characters glimpse fragments of a destiny none of them fully understand.
Winter's Fury unfolds through multiple POV perspectives, weaving together the ambitions of scheming kings, the loyalties of warriors, and the slow-burning connection developing between two people who never asked to be thrown together. Rayne's gift for character development shines here; Jael's strength is balanced by vulnerability, her quick temper by fierce protectiveness of those she loves. Eadmund's brokenness feels earned rather than convenient, and his journey from grief to something approaching hope forms the emotional backbone of the novel.
The political intrigue runs deep, with Lothar's machinations, Eirik's desperate need for a capable heir, and the looming threat of war against the southern kingdom of Hest all creating layers of tension beyond the central romance. Readers who enjoy morally grey characters will find much to appreciate in a cast where motivations are complex and loyalties shift like sand.
What distinguishes Winter's Fury is its balance of intimate character work with the promise of epic scope to come. This is a character-driven story first, establishing the relationships and conflicts that will carry through five more volumes. The slow-burn romance between Jael and Eadmund unfolds against a backdrop of complicated romance dynamics - her lingering feelings for Aleksander, his guilt over his dead wife, the political necessity binding them together against their will.
Rayne's prose moves with confidence, particularly in the battle sequences and the moments of quiet tension between characters who don't yet know how to trust each other. The book ends with threads enough to pull readers immediately into The Burning Sea, the second volume, where the kingdoms prepare for war and the darkness Edela glimpsed in her visions begins to take terrifying shape.
