Hannah Kaner

Hannah Frances Kaner (born 1992/1993) is an English fantasy novelist. Her debut fantasy novel Godkiller (2023), the first in the Fallen Gods trilogy, became a #1 Sunday Times bestseller. This was followed by its sequel Sunbringer (2024). Her third book Faithbreaker was published in 2025. All three books became #1 Sunday Times Bestsellers. She has been shortlisted for the Hugos, Locus, British Book Awards and British Fantasy Awards, as well as Longlisted for the Glass Bell award. Her work has been translated into 15 languages.

Kaner is from Northumberland and attended the King Edward VI School in Morpeth. She graduated with a degree in English from Pembroke College, Cambridge in 2014 and then a Master of Science from the University of Edinburgh. From creating and unravelling mysteries in Northumberland with her mates, to annoying the hell out of her supervisors at the University of Cambridge by insisting on comparing Terry Pratchett to Charles Dickens, and studying narrative theory in video games. They grudgingly (or joyfully?) gave her a 1st Class degree in English.

Kaner's work was inspired by the resilience of "angry women" and reflects feminist ideas as well as themes relating to the LGBTQIA+ community and the disabled community. A Northumbian writer living in Scotland, she is inspired by world mythologies, angry women, speculative fiction, and the stories we tell ourselves about being human. She puts her passion for communication into her work in the technology sector, specializing in creating digital tools for hard-to-reach communities.

In November 2021, HarperVoyager acquired the rights to publish Kaner's debut fantasy novel Godkiller, the first in the Fallen Gods trilogy, in early 2023. The novel was praised by The Washington Post and Entertainment Weekly for its gritty action and richly rendered world. Comparisons to The Witcher and The Last of Us highlighted Kaner's talent for found family dynamics and characters carrying the weight of their experiences. The third and final installment in the Fallen Gods trilogy, 'Faithbreaker', was published in 2025. Kaner's second trilogy was acquired by HarperVoyager in a 6 figure deal announced in October 2025. The first novel in the trilogy, A Snake Among Swans, is expected to be released in July 2026.

Hannah Kaner has her heart in Scotland and her roots in the north of England, continuing to craft dark, intimate fantasies about gods, monsters, and the stories we tell ourselves about being human.
