What Defines an Unreliable Narrator?
Unreliable narrators tell stories through compromised perspectives - their accounts are distorted by psychological instability, self-deception, deliberate manipulation, limited understanding, or fundamental misinterpretation of events. Crucially, readers must piece together actual truth from what's told, what's omitted, and contradictions between the narrator's account and observable reality. The unreliability might be immediately apparent or gradually revealed, but its discovery fundamentally recontextualises everything previously read.
Types of Unreliable Narrators
Unreliability manifests diversely: the self-deceived narrator who genuinely believes their distorted version of events, the mentally unstable narrator whose perception is compromised by psychological conditions, the naive narrator who lacks understanding to interpret events correctly, the deliberately deceptive narrator manipulating readers alongside other characters, the traumatised narrator whose memory is selectively incomplete, and the biased narrator whose prejudices colour every observation.
