The End of Her by Shari Lapena is a standalone domestic thriller published in July 2020, her fifth novel and a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller following on from The Couple Next Door and Someone We Know.
Stephanie and Patrick are several months into new parenthood and running on nothing. Their twin girls are colicky, the nights feel endless, and the daytime isn't much easier - Patrick's work is suffering, Stephanie barely remembers what sleep used to feel like, and neither of them has the reserves left to deal with anything beyond basic survival. Then Erica walks in. She was the best friend of Patrick's first wife Lindsey, who died in a car accident years before he met Stephanie, and she has arrived with an accusation that reframes everything: she doesn't believe it was an accident. She believes Patrick killed Lindsey. And she intends to go to the police - unless, of course, he makes it worth her while to stay quiet.
Patrick tells Stephanie everything immediately, framing it as exactly what it looks like: a brazen Deception, a blackmail attempt from a troubled woman manufacturing a motive from grief and old suspicion. He is calm, consistent, and utterly convincing. Stephanie believes him. The novel then sets about quietly eroding that certainty. Lapena is skilled at keeping the central question - is Patrick actually innocent - genuinely open across the novel's length, feeding just enough information about Lindsey's death, Erica's motivations, and Patrick's own past behaviour to make readers' confidence in him shift uncomfortably as the pages turn.
The Domestic Suspense here is Lapena at her most claustrophobic. Stephanie's sleep deprivation is rendered with real physical specificity, and it does the kind of work that the snow-bound lodge in An Unwanted Guest does - creating an environment where rational judgment is already compromised before the central threat arrives, so nothing can quite be trusted. The Gaslighting dynamic between Patrick and Stephanie is subtler than in some of Lapena's other work: he isn't necessarily lying, but his management of what Stephanie knows and how she comes to understand the situation is never quite as transparent as he presents it. That ambiguity about whether Stephanie is an Unreliable Narrator shaped by exhaustion or a woman correctly intuiting that something is wrong underneath her husband's reassurance is where the novel's real unease lives.
The Dark Secrets surrounding Lindsey's death widen as Erica's campaign escalates, and a secondary strand following the detective quietly looking into the old case runs alongside the main domestic pressure cooker. The Mystery and Secrets Revealed across the novel's back half arrive in quick succession, and the Twist Ending - which includes a final epilogue that readers either find brilliantly destabilising or frustratingly ambiguous - has generated the most discussion of any element in the book.
Reception has been more divided than for The Couple Next Door, with pacing in the middle section the most common criticism and the ending splitting opinion sharply. For readers who love fast, tightly wound Motherhood-inflected domestic thrillers built around a single, sustained "do you believe him or don't you" question, this is exactly what it sets out to be.
Books readers commonly enjoy after finishing The End of Her.
