The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena is a standalone domestic thriller published in 2016 and her debut adult novel, a Sunday Times bestseller described at the time as one of the most talked-about thrillers of the year. Optioned by Paramount Television, it established Lapena as one of the genre's most reliably twist-driven voices and is regularly cited as the book that got a generation of readers into domestic suspense fiction.
Anne and Marco Conti are only next door. Their neighbour Cynthia is throwing a dinner party and made clear from the start that she didn't want a six-month-old there - nothing personal, just the crying. The baby will be fine. They have the monitor. They'll take it in turns to check on her every half hour. That's a reasonable plan. That's what reasonable people do. When Marco goes back at 1 a.m., the front door is open. And the cot is empty.
What Lapena does so effectively with the premise is use the initial, appalling simplicity of the situation - a baby is gone, two parents are at the centre of every suspicion - to seed a genuinely complex web of Dark Secrets that extends through the marriage, the street, and the families on both sides of it. Anne is struggling with postpartum depression she's been trying to manage quietly; Marco has financial pressures he hasn't been entirely honest about; their neighbours Cynthia and Graham have their own history with this particular couple that hasn't been fully disclosed. Detective Rasbach, assigned to the case, reads the situation immediately: everyone in this equation is hiding something, and finding the baby depends on working out which secrets are relevant and which are simply the ordinary concealment of ordinary people suddenly caught under a spotlight they weren't expecting.
The Domestic Suspense structure works here because Lapena keeps the question of where to place sympathy consistently unstable. Anne's Unreliable Narrator quality isn't built on gaps in her account so much as on the Trauma and Healing around her mental health - readers keep reassessing how much of what she notices, suspects, and reports is reliable, which puts the reader in exactly the same position as Rasbach: trying to read a woman under enormous stress and figure out what's being withheld versus what she genuinely doesn't know. Marco, meanwhile, is the kind of husband who is clearly managing the situation on multiple fronts simultaneously, and the Deception layered through his account of events arrives in escalating increments.
The Twist Ending has been the most discussed element of the book since publication - the first reversal lands well before the final pages, and Lapena adds a further layer in the closing stretch that divides readers sharply: some find it a bold extra beat that earns the novel's page-turning reputation, others feel it's one twist further than the setup can cleanly support. The Mystery and Secrets Revealed throughout are propulsively handled, and at 300 pages Lapena's pacing is relentless without feeling rushed.
The Times called Lapena's plotting "clever" with "an excellent array of motives and suspects." Metro praised its "cunningly plotted cat-and-mouse trail." For readers who want a fast, sharp Motherhood-inflected domestic thriller that delivers exactly what it promises - and a few things it doesn't - The Couple Next Door remains the natural starting point for Lapena's catalogue.
