Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough is a standalone psychological thriller published in January 2017, and remains one of the genre's most discussed releases of the decade - adapted into a Netflix limited series in 2021 and still generating debate among readers years after publication, almost entirely because of how it ends.

Louise is a single mother working as a secretary, stuck in a rut she's stopped expecting to climb out of, when a rare night out leads to an unexpected spark with a stranger at a bar. He kisses her before they part. She doesn't expect to see him again - until Monday morning, when she discovers he's David, her new boss. David is married, and deeply apologetic about the kiss, though that doesn't stop him from finding excuses to be near her. Then Louise meets Adele, David's wife: beautiful, lonely, and eager for a friend in a town where she knows no one. Louise has no idea, at first, that the warm new friendship she's building with Adele and the complicated attraction she can't shake off with David are about to collide.

What makes this Love Triangle so distinctly unsettling is how little is actually as it seems on any side of it. David is controlling in ways Louise can't quite pin down. Adele is frightened of him in ways that don't add up to the picture-perfect marriage they present to the world. Pinborough tells the story across alternating perspectives - Louise's present-day chapters interwoven with Adele's own narration, and flashback sections detailing a formative chapter of Adele's past - and the structure makes clear early on that everyone telling this story is, in their own way, an Unreliable Narrator withholding something essential.

The Dark Secrets buried in this marriage run considerably deeper than infidelity, and the Obsession & Desire driving nearly every character's choices gives the book a suffocating, claustrophobic tension that builds steadily rather than relying on shock for its own sake. Pinborough has spoken about wanting to subvert the conventions of the modern marital thriller, and the Mystery and Secrets Revealed across the book's back half does exactly that - restructuring readers' understanding of David, Adele, and Louise's situation in ways that go well beyond a typical "who's lying" reveal.

Which brings us to the Twist Ending - genuinely one of the most polarising in contemporary thriller fiction. The marketing campaign for the book famously asked readers not to spoil it for anyone else, and that culture of secrecy has more or less held for nearly a decade: some readers consider the final reveal an audacious, genre-redefining swing; others feel blindsided by a direction the rest of the book doesn't quite earn. Either way, it's virtually impossible to discuss without spoiling it, which is precisely the point.

For readers who want a marital thriller that refuses to play by the genre's usual rules - and who are prepared to have a strong reaction to wherever it ultimately goes - Behind Her Eyes remains essential, divisive reading.
