One of Us Is Next by Karen M. McManus returns to Bayview High where a dangerous Truth or Dare game turns deadly. New protagonists Maeve, Knox, and Phoebe must stop the game before more people die in this gripping sequel.

One of Us Is Next is Karen M. McManus's 2020 sequel to One of Us Is Lying, returning readers to Bayview High School where a new mystery threatens the community still recovering from Simon Kelleher's murder. Whilst the original Bayview Crew appears in supporting roles, this companion novel introduces fresh protagonists facing a different kind of danger - one that weaponizes secrets through a twisted game with lethal consequences.

A year has passed since Simon's death, and Bayview High remains haunted by its legacy. The school has banned gossip apps and implemented strict anti-bullying policies, but the culture of secrets and social hierarchy persists. When a game of Truth or Dare begins circulating anonymously, students initially treat it as harmless fun - answer a truth question or complete a dare, or your secret gets exposed publicly.

But the game quickly escalates. The truths demanded are increasingly invasive, the dares progressively dangerous, and the secrets threatened with exposure are devastating. When a student dies during a dare gone wrong, it becomes clear someone is using the game not just for entertainment but for revenge. The question becomes: who's running the game, and what's their endgame?

McManus shifts focus to three new narrators: Maeve Rojas, Bronwyn's younger sister, who's always lived in her perfect sibling's shadow and struggles with feeling ordinary; Knox Myers, a popular athlete whose family harbours dark secrets and whose deceased sister's connection to the game slowly emerges; and Phoebe Lawton, Knox's girlfriend, who seems perfect on the surface but carries trauma from a past assault that the game threatens to expose.

The multiple POV structure again allows McManus to explore how different people experience the same events. Maeve's perspective reveals the pressure of being the "normal" sibling in an accomplished family. Knox's chapters expose the facade of his privileged life and his complicated grief over his sister. Phoebe's narration handles sexual assault and its aftermath with sensitivity, showing how trauma shapes behaviour and relationships.

The original Bayview Crew - Bronwyn, Nate, Addy, and Cooper - return as supporting characters, now in university but still connected to Bayview. Their appearances provide continuity and fan service whilst allowing new characters to claim the spotlight. The dynamic between Maeve and her famous sister Bronwyn adds family complexity often missing from YA thrillers.

The Truth or Dare game itself is a clever evolution of Simon's gossip app, reflecting how technology and social manipulation have evolved. McManus uses it to explore cyberbullying, peer pressure, and how anonymity enables cruelty. The game forces students to make impossible choices: protect your secret or protect yourself, expose your truth or risk someone else's safety.

The mystery is intricately plotted with multiple suspects and motivations. McManus plants clues whilst misdirecting readers, building to a revelation that connects to both the current game and Bayview's troubled past. The solution addresses themes of grief, revenge, and how unresolved trauma can manifest in destructive ways.

Beyond the central mystery, the novel explores toxic masculinity, rape culture, family dysfunction, the pressure to maintain appearances, and how communities enable abuse through silence. Phoebe's storyline particularly resonates, handling sexual assault with nuance - showing both the immediate trauma and long-term effects whilst avoiding graphic depiction.

Supporting characters add depth: Derek, a Bayview outsider who becomes entangled in the mystery; Luis, Maeve's friend harbouring his own secrets; and various students whose participation in the game reveals Bayview's ongoing toxicity.

One of Us Is Next works both as a standalone and as a companion to the original, expanding the Bayview universe whilst telling a complete, gripping story.
