One of Us Is Lying Tropes
One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus follows five students who enter detention - but only four leave alive. When the victim planned to expose everyone's secrets, each survivor becomes a murder suspect in this addictive YA thriller.
One of Us Is Lying is Karen M. McManus's explosive 2017 debut novel that redefined YA mystery and became a cultural phenomenon. Described as "The Breakfast Club meets murder mystery," this page-turning thriller follows four high school students who must prove their innocence whilst uncovering who really wanted Simon Kelleher dead - and why.
The premise is deceptively simple yet utterly compelling: five students walk into detention at Bayview High School on a Monday afternoon. Simon Kelleher, creator of the notorious gossip app "About That," which exposes students' secrets, suddenly collapses from a severe allergic reaction. By the time the ambulance arrives, he's dead. The cause? Someone tampered with his EpiPen and ensured peanut oil was in the classroom, turning what should have been a minor reaction into murder.
The four survivors instantly become prime suspects, each fitting a convenient stereotype: Bronwyn Rojas, the perfect student with Ivy League ambitions; Nate Macaulay, the troubled drug dealer with a criminal record; Addy Prentiss, the beautiful homecoming princess dependent on her boyfriend; and Cooper Clay, the baseball star headed for a professional career. Simon was planning to post devastating secrets about each of them on his app - secrets worth killing for.
McManus employs alternating POV chapters between the four suspects, allowing readers intimate access to each character's thoughts, fears, and hidden truths. This structure creates both empathy and suspicion - we understand each character's motivations whilst questioning their innocence. The shifting perspectives also reveal how the same events look different depending on who's narrating, emphasizing themes of perception versus reality.
As police investigation intensifies and media circus descends, the four are forced to work together despite their differences. What emerges is an unlikely alliance that gradually transforms into genuine friendship. The novel excels at character development - these aren't cardboard stereotypes but fully realized teenagers dealing with family dysfunction, sexuality, addiction, abusive relationships, and crushing academic pressure.
The secrets themselves are compelling and relevant: Bronwyn cheated on a chemistry test to maintain her perfect record; Nate deals drugs to support himself after his mother abandoned him; Addy had a brief affair, betraying her controlling boyfriend; Cooper is gay and closeted, terrified of losing his baseball career and conservative family's approval. Each secret represents not just a motive for murder but a commentary on the impossible standards and toxic culture of contemporary high school life.
McManus plants clues throughout whilst deploying red herrings that keep readers guessing. The mystery's solution is both surprising and, in retrospect, perfectly constructed - all the pieces were there, but McManus's misdirection ensures the revelation lands with impact. The killer's identity and motive speak to themes of revenge, toxic masculinity, and the devastating consequences of bullying and social humiliation.
Beyond the whodunnit plot, the novel explores social media's destructive power, particularly how gossip apps and online shaming destroy lives. Simon's "About That" represents the worst of internet culture - anonymous cruelty, invasion of privacy, and the weaponization of secrets. The book asks important questions about privacy, accountability, and whether anyone deserves to have their worst moments publicly exposed.
Supporting characters add depth: Simon himself, revealed through flashbacks and investigation; the suspects' families and friends; investigating detectives; and various Bayview High students whose own secrets gradually surface.
One of Us Is Lying spent over 200 weeks on bestseller lists, spawned sequels, and received a Peacock adaptation.
