One of Us Is Back is Karen M. McManus's 2023 third instalment in the One of Us Is Lying series, bringing the beloved original Bayview Crew back to centre stage. This allows readers to see how each has grown since the original novel whilst showing how trauma has shaped their adult lives. The rotating perspectives reveal that whilst they've outwardly succeeded, they each carry scars from Simon's death and the investigation that followed.

The mystery explores several compelling questions: Is this related to Simon's death, or something entirely new? Are they being targeted individually, or is attacking the group the point? Who knows enough about all four to orchestrate such personalized threats? The novel cleverly plays on readers' knowledge of the previous books whilst introducing fresh twists that don't simply rehash old plots.

What distinguishes One of Us Is Back from typical thriller sequels is its focus on character development and the long-term effects of trauma. McManus examines how surviving one terrifying experience doesn't make you immune to fear - if anything, it can make you more vulnerable.
