The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman reunites the Thursday Murder Club as Elizabeth's past catches up with her. When an old spy colleague resurfaces with stolen diamonds and deadly enemies, the gang faces their most dangerous case yet.
The Man Who Died Twice is Richard Osman's triumphant 2021 follow-up to The Thursday Murder Club, proving his debut was no fluke. This second instalment deepens the mystery, raises the stakes, and delves into Elizabeth's enigmatic past whilst maintaining the warmth, wit, and clever plotting that made the series a phenomenon.
The novel opens with a ghost from Elizabeth's past: Marcus Carmichael, a former colleague from her MI5 days, appears at Coopers Chase claiming he's dying and needs Elizabeth's help recovering stolen diamonds worth millions. Marcus - who may or may not have actually died previously, hence the title - has double-crossed dangerous people, and now both the diamonds and the criminals who want them are heading to the retirement village.
What begins as Elizabeth's problem quickly becomes the Thursday Murder Club's mission. Joyce, Ibrahim, and Ron rally around their friend, even as Elizabeth tries to protect them from the genuine danger her past has brought to their doorstep. The gang finds themselves navigating a world far removed from cosy village mysteries - one involving international criminals, violent enforcers, and high-stakes subterfuge.
Osman brilliantly expands the series' scope whilst keeping its heart intact. The mystery takes the gang beyond Coopers Chase to London, introduces genuinely threatening villains, and explores the murkier aspects of Elizabeth's intelligence career. Yet the novel never loses the warmth and humour that define the series. Joyce still keeps her diary (providing delightful chapter openings), Ibrahim still offers psychological insights wrapped in endearing literalness, and Ron still cuts through nonsense with working-class directness.
The book also deepens relationships established in the first novel. DCI Chris Hudson and PC Donna De Freitas return, their partnership with the Thursday Murder Club now comfortable and mutually beneficial. Chris's personal life develops, Donna's ambition drives subplots, and both remain fully realized characters rather than mere police procedural accessories.
New characters enrich the cast: Connie Johnson, a formidable woman from Elizabeth's past who may be friend or foe; the Tatiana, a terrifying enforcer; and various Coopers Chase residents who add layers to the community. Supporting characters from the first book - including Elizabeth's husband Stephen, whose dementia progression is handled with devastating tenderness - receive more development.
The novel's structure mirrors the first: short, addictive chapters alternating perspectives, Joyce's diary entries, and pacing that makes stopping nearly impossible. Osman plants clues with precision, misdirects skilfully, and delivers twists that surprise without feeling cheap. The mystery is genuinely clever, but never so complex that readers lose the thread.
Themes of loyalty and friendship, the weight of past choices, ageing and mortality (particularly through Stephen's storyline), the cost of living a secret life, chosen family, and second chances run throughout. Osman explores how the past never truly stays buried and how protecting loved ones sometimes requires dangerous choices.
What makes The Man Who Died Twice special is its emotional depth. Stephen's dementia is portrayed with heartbreaking realism - Elizabeth's grief for the husband she's losing whilst he's still alive provides the novel's emotional core. Osman balances this devastating subplot with humour and hope, never exploiting tragedy for cheap sentiment.
The novel won widespread acclaim, topping bestseller lists worldwide and cementing the Thursday Murder Club's place in contemporary crime fiction's pantheon.
