The Bullet That Missed by Richard Osman sees the Thursday Murder Club investigate a cold case involving a TV presenter's mysterious death. As they uncover dangerous truths, one member faces a devastating diagnosis that threatens everything.
The Bullet That Missed is Richard Osman's third Thursday Murder Club novel, published in 2022, which demonstrates the series' continued evolution whilst maintaining the warmth and wit that have made it beloved worldwide. This instalment tackles both an intricate cold case and deeply personal challenges, proving Osman can balance lighthearted mystery with genuinely moving emotional stakes.
The novel opens with an unusual request: an infamous cold case involving Bethany Waites, a television presenter who disappeared a decade ago, presumed murdered. A man imprisoned for her killing insists he's innocent and wants the Thursday Murder Club to prove it. The gang agrees, diving into a tangled web involving corrupt police, organized crime, drug smuggling, and powerful people with secrets to protect.
Simultaneously, the novel introduces a more sinister thread: a professional assassin known only as "the Viking" who becomes entangled in the investigation. This character brings genuine menace to the story, raising stakes beyond anything the Thursday Murder Club has faced. The assassin subplot runs parallel to the cold case, eventually colliding in ways both surprising and satisfying.
What distinguishes The Bullet That Missed from its predecessors is its willingness to confront mortality head-on. One of the beloved quartet receives a devastating diagnosis that forces both the character and readers to contemplate loss within this found family. Osman handles this development with characteristic sensitivity - never maudlin, but genuinely affecting. The diagnosis becomes both a ticking clock for the investigation and an exploration of how we face our remaining time.
The novel deepens established relationships whilst introducing compelling new characters. Returning favourites DCI Chris Hudson and PC Donna De Freitas continue their partnership with the gang, with both officers' personal lives receiving meaningful development. Bogdan, the handyman introduced in previous books, plays a larger role, his friendship with Elizabeth providing some of the novel's most touching moments.
Joyce's diary entries continue providing delightful chapter openings, offering her perspective on investigations and village life. Ibrahim's psychological insights remain crucial to solving the mystery, whilst Ron's loyalty and street smarts prove invaluable. Elizabeth, as always, operates with spy-craft precision, though this case challenges even her formidable abilities.
The mystery itself is cleverly constructed, involving multiple timelines, red herrings, and revelations that recontextualize earlier information. Osman plants clues throughout, rewarding attentive readers whilst ensuring the solution feels both surprising and inevitable. The cold case format allows exploration of how crimes ripple through time, affecting lives years after the original events.
Coopers Chase remains the series' anchor, with village life providing both comedy and community. New residents and recurring characters add texture, from yoga classes to coffee mornings to the ongoing property developments that continue transforming the retirement village. The setting remains recognizably cosy whilst accommodating increasingly complex crimes.
Themes of memory and dementia, facing mortality with dignity, the passage of time and its effects on cases and people, corruption and justice, friendship as sustenance through difficult times, and legacy - what we leave behind - run throughout. The title itself refers both to a literal bullet in the case and metaphorically to the things we avoid confronting until we can't.
The Bullet That Missed balances humour with genuine emotion more successfully than perhaps any previous instalment, cementing the series' reputation for intelligent, heartwarming crime fiction.
