Onyx is the second book in Jennifer L. Armentrout's Lux series - a YA science fiction romance where Katy and Daemon's uneasy connection deepens as a dangerous new arrival threatens everything they've kept hidden.
Onyx is Jennifer L. Armentrout's 2012 second instalment in the Lux series, and it does exactly what the best second books do - it takes everything Obsidian established and makes it harder, messier, and considerably more complicated. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic that drove the first book doesn't simply continue here; it evolves, and in evolving it asks more of both characters than either of them anticipated. If Obsidian was about two people discovering they couldn't keep their distance, Onyx is about what happens when they stop pretending that distance was ever really possible.
Following on from where Obsidian left us, Katy Swartz is now navigating a reality that looks ordinary from the outside but is anything but. She knows what Daemon Black is. She knows about the Luxen, about the government's surveillance of them, and about the connection that formed between her and Daemon as a consequence of what they went through together. What she's still working out is what any of it means - for her safety, for her friendships, and for the feelings she's doing her best not to examine too closely. The slow-burn romance that has been building since the moment she moved in next door reaches new levels of tension in Onyx, partly because both characters are finally in a position where they can't pretend indifference, and partly because everything around them keeps getting in the way.
The arrival of a mysterious new student - Blake - introduces a love triangle that Armentrout handles with more nuance than the trope sometimes receives. Blake is interesting in his own right, and his presence doesn't exist merely to manufacture jealousy. He brings new information, new danger, and new questions about who can be trusted - and the betrayal that underpins his storyline gives Onyx its sharpest dramatic edge. The secret society of government operatives monitoring the Luxen feels closer and more threatening here than it did in the first book, and government control and surveillance becomes an increasingly visible pressure on every character's choices.
Katy continues to be one of the genre's more grounded heroines. She makes decisions in Onyx that don't always go well, and Armentrout doesn't smooth over the consequences. The forced proximity that defined her relationship with Daemon in Obsidian gives way to something more deliberate here - these are two people choosing to be in each other's orbit even when it would be easier not to be, and that shift in agency gives the romance real weight. The witty banter & sharp dialogue between them remains one of the series' most reliable pleasures, but it carries a different charge in Onyx - there's more at stake beneath the surface now, and both characters know it.
Armentrout expands the world-building of the Lux series in Onyx without overwhelming the character dynamics that made the first book work. The human/alien romance at the heart of the story is given room to breathe and deepen, while the science fiction infrastructure - the rules governing the Luxen, the reach of the government programme, the risks that come with being connected to a non-human - becomes more clearly defined. The result is a second book that feels like a genuine step forward rather than a holding pattern, raising the emotional and narrative stakes in ways that make the rest of the series feel essential.
