Obsidian

Obsidian is a YA science fiction romance set in small-town West Virginia, where new girl Katy discovers her next-door neighbour is harbouring an extraordinary secret. Sharp enemies-to-lovers tension and witty banter make it impossible to put down.

Obsidian is Jennifer L. Armentrout's 2011 first instalment in the Lux series - a YA science fiction romance that arrived with all the hallmarks of a future fan favourite: a razor-sharp heroine, a hero designed to get under your skin, and a small-town setting that conceals something far larger and more dangerous than it appears. It launched one of the most beloved enemies-to-lovers dynamics in the genre, and more than a decade on, it remains the book readers reach for when they want to know where the obsession begins.

Katy Swartz has just moved to Ketterman, West Virginia, with her mother - a fresh start after a difficult year, in a town so small and quiet it barely registers on a map. What she doesn't expect is her next-door neighbour. Daemon Black is stunning, infuriating, and makes his feelings about her presence abundantly clear from the moment they meet: he isn't interested, and he'd rather she kept her distance. His twin sister Dee, warm and immediately welcoming, is everything Daemon isn't - and it's through Dee that Katy finds herself pulled deeper into a world she was never supposed to know about. Because Daemon and Dee aren't human. They're Luxen - beings of pure light, originally from another world - living quietly among the population under the watchful eye of a government agency that monitors their every move. Their existence is classified. And now Katy knows.

What makes Obsidian so effective is the way Armentrout builds the forced proximity between Katy and Daemon into something genuinely charged. They share a street, a social circle, and increasingly a secret - and the slow-burn romance that develops between them is built on friction rather than warmth. Daemon is guarded, occasionally hostile, and carries a protectiveness he clearly resents having to feel. Katy, for her part, refuses to be cowed. The witty banter & sharp dialogue between them is one of the book's great pleasures: these are two characters who push back against each other in equal measure, and watching the dynamic shift is enormously satisfying.

Katy herself is a protagonist worth noting. She's a book blogger - a detail that was fresh and specific when the novel was first published - and her interiority is grounded and self-aware in a way that makes her easy to root for. She doesn't have a hidden identity or a destiny she's been keeping from herself; she's simply an ordinary girl who stumbled into an extraordinary situation, and the tension of the novel comes from watching her navigate a world that has rules she wasn't given and dangers she didn't choose. The alien threat that underpins the Luxen's secrecy is introduced carefully across the book, building a sense of unease beneath the romance without overwhelming it.

The secret society of government oversight and the broader mythology of the Luxen are sketched in Obsidian with enough detail to feel real without front-loading the series with exposition. Armentrout is disciplined about what she reveals and when - readers are given just enough to feel the weight of the world Katy has stepped into, and just enough to want to keep going. The forbidden romance that crystallises by the novel's end is earned through everything that precedes it: the hostility, the proximity, the shared danger, and the gradual, reluctant recognition that something real is developing between two people who would both prefer it wasn't.

Obsidian is the kind of opener that justifies a five-book series. It sets the tone, establishes the relationships, and delivers enough resolution to feel satisfying while making it very clear there is far more to come.
