A Clash of Kings
A Song of Ice and Fire #2
George R. R. Martin
The Prophecy trope centers on ancient predictions, mystical visions, or divine proclamations that foretell future events - typically world-altering occurrences involving the protagonist. These cryptic foretellings drive narratives forward whilst raising profound questions about fate versus free will, whether the future can be changed, and if attempting to avoid prophecy actually fulfills it.
Prophecies are predictions made through supernatural means - oracles, visions, ancient texts, or divine revelation - that outline significant future events. They're typically vague, metaphorical, or subject to interpretation, allowing for dramatic irony as characters misunderstand their meaning. The prophecy might predict a hero's rise, a villain's fall, apocalyptic destruction, or the fulfillment of specific conditions. Characters may be working to fulfill the prophecy, desperately trying to prevent it, or unaware they're already enacting it.
Classic prophecy narratives feature cryptic wording open to multiple interpretations, self-fulfilling elements where attempts to avoid fate actually cause it, the revelation that prophecies can be fulfilled in unexpected ways, and the tension between accepting destiny and fighting for agency. Often includes chosen ones, ticking clocks as prophesied dates approach, multiple parties interpreting the same prophecy differently, and the question of whether prophecies describe inevitable fate or merely probable outcomes.
Prophecies create inherent narrative tension - readers know something significant will happen but not how or when. They explore philosophical questions about determinism, whether knowledge of the future grants power or removes choice, and if destiny is inescapable or merely a challenge to overcome. The trope also provides satisfying moments when cryptic predictions suddenly make sense.
Prophecy reminds us that sometimes the future isn't what we expect - it's exactly what was foretold, just not how we imagined.
