These cryptic foretellings drive narratives forward whilst raising profound questions about fate versus free will, whether the future can be changed, and if attempting to avoid prophecy actually fulfills it.

What Defines Prophecy?

Prophecies are predictions made through supernatural means - oracles, visions, ancient texts, or divine revelation - that outline significant future events. They're typically vague, metaphorical, or subject to interpretation, allowing for dramatic irony as characters misunderstand their meaning. The prophecy might predict a hero's rise, a villain's fall, apocalyptic destruction, or the fulfillment of specific conditions. Characters may be working to fulfill the prophecy, desperately trying to prevent it, or unaware they're already enacting it.

Core Elements

Classic prophecy narratives feature cryptic wording open to multiple interpretations, self-fulfilling elements where attempts to avoid fate actually cause it, the revelation that prophecies can be fulfilled in unexpected ways, and the tension between accepting destiny and fighting for agency.
