A Court of Frost and Starlight
A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) #4
Sarah J. Maas
The Chosen One trope centers on a protagonist singled out by fate, prophecy, or unique circumstances to accomplish what no one else can - typically saving the world, defeating an ancient evil, or fulfilling a destiny that's been foretold for generations. This character, often an unlikely hero, carries the weight of being irreplaceable in a cosmic plan they didn't choose but cannot escape.
Chosen Ones are marked by destiny through prophecies, special bloodlines, unique powers, or being the only person capable of wielding a legendary weapon or magic. They're often ordinary individuals thrust into extraordinary circumstances - the farm boy who's actually the lost heir, the orphan with hidden magical abilities, or the teenager who's prophesied to defeat darkness. The trope explores themes of destiny versus free will, the burden of expectation, and whether greatness is born or made.
Classic markers include mysterious origins, mentor figures who guide the hero toward their destiny, special abilities that manifest at pivotal moments, and trials designed to test their worthiness. The Chosen One often resists their calling initially (the "refusal of the call") before accepting their role. They typically possess an innate goodness or unique perspective that makes them suited for their task beyond mere power.
Modern interpretations increasingly subvert the trope - exploring the psychological toll of being chosen, questioning whether prophecies create heroes or trap them, or revealing that being "chosen" is manipulation rather than destiny. The trope appeals to wish-fulfillment whilst exploring profound questions about agency, responsibility, and what we owe to forces beyond our control.
The Chosen One reminds us that sometimes the most ordinary people are capable of the most extraordinary things.
