Soul of Stars is Ashley Poston's 2019 second and final instalment in the Heart of Iron series, published by Balzer + Bray and concluding the duology that began with Heart of Iron. Where the first book followed an outlaw girl on the run, this instalment finds her in a dramatically different position: Ana now sits as Empress of the Iron Kingdom, though most of the galaxy believes her dead after her escape from the HIVE, a hostile AI program that's left her closest companion, D09, trapped in its grip.

Determined to save Di and reclaim what's hers, Ana's only real lead is Starbright - the one person known to have hacked into the HIVE and survived. But the cost of pursuing that lead lands hard on the found-family crew of the Dossier, and the fallout sends Ana and her friends spiralling toward something far larger than a rescue mission: an ancient, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-adjacent entity known as the Great Dark, whose ambitions threaten to consume far more than just one kingdom. Along the way, sharp-witted pilot Jax is forced back toward the home and the fate he spent the first book running from, and Robb finds himself reckoning with feelings for a boy whose true identity turns out to be more complicated than either of them expected.

What makes this such a satisfying close to the duology is how much weight Poston gives the Found Family at its centre. The crew of the Dossier - expanded since the first book, and given considerably more room to breathe here - carries real emotional stakes into every confrontation with the Great Dark, and the Survival and Resilience the group draws on together feels earned rather than convenient. Poston continues to tell the story across Multiple POV threads, and while the structure asks a little more of readers tracking several storylines at once, it pays off in a finale that ties character arcs together with real care.

The Human-Robot Friendship between Ana and D09 remains the emotional anchor of the whole series, and watching that bond tested by the HIVE's influence over him gives this instalment some of its most affecting material. Elsewhere, the Friends to Lovers dynamic between Jax and Robb develops into one of the series' most beloved threads, handled with the same easy, unforced Diverse Representation that defined the first book - a central same-sex couple here joined by additional queer pairings and disability representation woven naturally throughout.

Thematically, Ana's arc from outlaw to ruler gives the book real space to explore Power & Corruption - what it costs to hold authority she never asked for, and what she's willing to risk to protect the people she loves rather than simply the throne she's inherited. Reception has been warm, with many readers naming this a satisfying, emotionally resonant conclusion even as some wished for tighter pacing in the back half.

For readers who fell for the found-family warmth and Anastasia-inspired stakes of Heart of Iron, Soul of Stars delivers the conclusion that duology earned - bigger in scope, deeper in heart, and considerably more confident in its diverse, lovable cast.
