Book 2 of the Earthen Contenders series

Unprepared Healer

Unprepared Healer by Jonathan Brooks continues Earthen Contenders as Thaden's identity is exposed, forcing him to flee Ashcleft whilst navigating a dangerous Contender ranking system. This 2024 sequel expands Tarth's world with new cities, system challenges, and escalating stakes.

Unprepared Healer is Jonathan Brooks's 2024 second installment in the Earthen Contenders series, picking up immediately from the first book's consequences as Thaden's carefully maintained anonymity collapses. After the Assimilation System inadvertently outed Thaden as a Contender and confirmed that he was at the top of most of the Rankings, the Lifewarden has to leave the town of Ashcleft as soon as possible. With his Level being over 21, he can now be attacked by other Contenders with a lower Level than him—they are eager to bring him down so that they'll have a chance at the top spot, which will guarantee that their families back home on Earth will be safe.

The sequel introduces a significant new complication to Thaden's already unusual situation. With the completely unfair Contender versus Contender system in place, he can't defend himself even if he had that capability, as any damage he might inflict upon them is immediately negated. A healer class protagonist who couldn't fight his way out of trouble now faces the additional constraint that the system actively prevents him from even attempting defensive action against other players—creating a chase dynamic where his primary strategy must be evasion and continued identity concealment rather than confrontation.

Fortunately, Thaden escapes those who wish him harm, but as he travels further from Ashcleft, he realizes that he doesn't exactly have a plan on how to proceed now that his status has been revealed. Venturing into the wider world of Tarth has its own problems, though the danger to him is largely in the form of other Contenders learning his identity, and not the monsters that roam across the landscape or the dungeons that might challenge him. This distinction creates an interesting inversion of typical LitRPG danger—the monsters and dungeons that would threaten most Contenders are manageable for Thaden whilst other players represent the real threat to his continued operation.

The wider world of Tarth receives meaningful development as Thaden travels beyond Ashcleft's familiar boundaries, with new cities, guild structures, and power dynamics revealing how Tarth's Contender society has organized itself around the Assimilation System's rules and Rankings. One city is controlled by power-mad guilds that remove independent players from the contest, demonstrating that the human political landscape of Tarth creates as many obstacles as the system's mechanical challenges.

When Thaden unwittingly stumbles upon a challenge that the Assimilation System has designed, he is completely unprepared for the consequences of his actions. But in reality, it's the world of Tarth that is completely unprepared for him. The system-designed challenge and its unexpected consequences advance both the plot and Thaden's understanding of Tarth's deeper mechanics, setting up the series' continuing escalation.

Themes of identity concealment becoming increasingly difficult, system rules creating unexpected vulnerabilities, navigating human politics alongside monster threats, consequences of actions rippling beyond immediate circumstances, and resourcefulness under compounding pressure run throughout.
