Earthen Contenders

An overpowered healer with infinite mana. Jonathan Brooks' Earthen Contenders follows Thaden's journey through six books of dungeon-crawling, progression, and world-saving battles in this completed LitRPG isekai series set on the world of Tarth.

Earthen Contenders is a completed six-book LitRPG isekai series by Jonathan Brooks, author of the Magical Fusion series. Set on the world of Tarth, this progression fantasy follows Thaden, an ordinary man from Earth who finds himself thrust into an extraordinary situation when millions of humans are transported to a new world to become "Contenders" in a system-driven game of survival and power.

The series begins with a catastrophic mistake. During the mass transference of humans from Earth, something goes wrong with Thaden's transfer. Instead of being sent to the Training program alongside everyone else, he's ejected from the process entirely and deposited into the mouth of an active volcano for disposal. Through a miraculous and horrifying series of events, Thaden survives - but finds himself alone in a dungeon with no clothes, no weapons, and no way to defend himself.

Worse still, the Assimilation System has automatically assigned him a Class: Assistant Healer, a Support-based Class with absolutely no offensive capabilities. As a healer, none of Thaden's spells deal damage, and the System prevents him from even picking up weapons. In a world where survival depends on killing monsters and completing dungeons, Thaden appears to have been dealt an impossible hand.

But appearances can be deceiving. Thaden quickly discovers something unique about himself that might just allow him to survive: he seemingly never runs out of Mana. This single advantage - infinite magical resources for healing and protection spells - becomes the foundation for one of the most creative overpowered main character concepts in the LitRPG genre. What begins as a desperate struggle for survival evolves into a journey that challenges the fundamental assumptions of the Assimilation System itself.

The world of Tarth is divided into Regions, each undergoing Developmental Phases that progressively increase in difficulty. Contenders must navigate dungeons, battle monsters, level up their Classes, and survive evolving game mechanics that reward strength whilst punishing weakness. The series explores Guilds, Rankings, Raid Parties, and the intricate systems that govern this new reality - all through the lens of a protagonist who must succeed despite having a Class that was never designed for solo play.

As the series progresses, Thaden's journey expands from personal survival to world-threatening stakes. The Assimilation System itself becomes a character in the story, with mysteries surrounding its true purpose and the forces that oppose it. Thaden encounters SPECIAL Quests, Anchor dungeons, Calamities, and an Adversarial entity that threatens not just Region #1, but potentially all of Tarth.

Jonathan Brooks brings his signature attention to detail to the Earthen Contenders series, delivering intricate LitRPG / GameLit mechanics, satisfying dungeon crawler action, and portal fantasy / isekai world-building. The series features the stat-heavy progression and creative problem-solving that fans of Brooks' other work have come to expect, whilst exploring themes of responsibility, adaptation, and what it truly means to be powerful in a world that doesn't value your strengths.

The Earthen Contenders series consists of six books: Unexpected Healer, Unprepared Healer, Undisguised Healer, Unaffiliated Healer, Unrestrained Healer, and the concluding Unbelievable Healer. Each instalment builds upon the last, escalating both Thaden's personal power and the scope of threats he must face.

For readers who enjoy watching weak to strong protagonist arcs, creative approaches to class-based systems, and protagonists who succeed through intelligence and adaptation rather than brute force, Earthen Contenders offers a complete, satisfying narrative. Thaden's squirrel companion Sadia, his complex relationship with Guild dynamics, and his eventual role as a catalyst for systemic change make this series stand out in a crowded genre.

Books in the Earthen Contenders Series

Book 1: Unexpected Healer (2024)

Thaden's journey begins with disaster. Transported from Earth to become a Contender on the world of Tarth, his transfer goes catastrophically wrong, ejecting him into a dungeon with no equipment and a seemingly useless Class: Assistant Healer. With no offensive spells and unable to wield weapons, Thaden must survive through healing and protection magic alone. The discovery that he has seemingly infinite Mana becomes his only advantage in a world designed to kill the unprepared. This portal fantasy / isekai opener establishes the unique premise that defines the series - an overpowered main character whose power comes not from damage output but from never running out of resources.

Book 2: Unprepared Healer (2024)

Having escaped the initial dungeon, Thaden must navigate the wider world of Tarth whilst concealing the true nature of his abilities. The Assimilation System's rules create dangerous situations for a solo healer, and Thaden quickly learns that being recognised as extraordinary brings as many problems as solutions. This instalment explores Guild mechanics, the social dynamics of Contenders, and Thaden's growing understanding of the system that governs this world. The penalties his Class imposes on party members create challenging dynamics, forcing Thaden to find creative solutions to problems most Contenders solve through straightforward combat.

Book 3: Undisguised Healer (2024)

Forced to reveal his identity, Thaden confronts the consequences of his growing fame and the responsibilities that come with his unique abilities. SPECIAL Quests assigned by the Assimilation System send him on a path to locate and complete Anchor dungeons - critical locations that, if left unchecked, could result in catastrophic loss of life. Thaden's inner sense of responsibility drives him to minimise destruction and save lives, even when doing so puts him at greater personal risk. This instalment shifts from pure survival to proactive heroism, as Thaden begins to understand the larger forces at work on Tarth.

Book 4: Unaffiliated Healer (2024)

Thaden is built for running dungeons solo, but his current Evolution Assignment requires him to complete an Intermediate dungeon with a full Raid Party of at least 100 people - without any casualties. The problem? The Assimilation System has embraced Guilds, legitimising them into official organisations with their own Quests and Rankings. No Guild wants to risk their Ranking by bringing along an unaffiliated healer whose Class imposes detrimental effects on party members. Thaden must find a Guild willing to give him a chance, navigating political dynamics and proving his worth in a system that seems designed to exclude him.

Book 5: Unrestrained Healer (2025)

After barely surviving an attack by an Adversarial entity, Thaden helps rebuild the Guild he'd joined - but his recent Level increases have made him too powerful to participate in Guild activities. Once again solo, with only his squirrel companion Sadia by his side, Thaden turns his attention to higher-difficulty dungeons. But the Adversary isn't finished with Tarth. What Thaden encountered was merely the beginning of a worldwide infiltration serious enough that the Assimilation System itself deploys agents to fight back. Unrestrained by Guild responsibilities and free to use his full power, Thaden must decide whether to face this existential threat voluntarily - or be pulled into the fight regardless of his wishes.

Book 6: Unbelievable Healer (2025)

The thrilling conclusion to the Earthen Contenders series arrives as Thaden inadvertently triggers the start of Developmental Phase 4 by destroying The Citadel. From his companion Sadia, he learns what the Wildlands has in store for the Contenders. Despite his incredible power as a solo healer, Thaden quickly realises he cannot complete the final Phase alone - numerous Contenders must participate. The problem is stark: most Contenders are far behind the required Level to survive the Wildlands' monsters. If Thaden doesn't find a way to help them reach that threshold, not just Region #1 but the entire world faces inevitable destruction. Will Thaden persevere when the odds are impossible, or will he risk everything on an unbelievably dangerous gambit?
