Maid for Each Other by Lynn Painter is a standalone Contemporary Romance that takes a familiar setup and wrings every last drop of comic potential from it. Abi Mariano is juggling two jobs and an MFA in creative writing when a building-wide infestation forces her out of her flat with nowhere to go. Her solution - temporarily staying in the penthouse she cleans, belonging to a client she's never even met - seems harmless enough. Then his parents walk through the door.
The mix-up is immediate and gloriously chaotic. Abi is mistaken not for the house cleaner but for the mysterious girlfriend Declan Powell has been fabricating to keep his family off his back. Declan - career-first, shareholder-weekend-bound, and suddenly in desperate need of a convincing partner - tracks Abi down and proposes a deal: Fake Dating that works in both their favours. She gets everything she needs for the duration; he gets credibility. No feelings involved. Obviously. The Forced Proximity that follows is the engine of the whole book, trapping two people from very different worlds in close quarters with nothing but their wits for armour.
The Class Struggle underpinning Abi and Declan's arrangement is never heavy-handed - Painter uses it for comedy as much as tension, letting the gap between a cash-strapped grad student and a penthouse-owning executive generate one awkward, hilarious situation after another. What stops the dynamic tipping into discomfort is Abi herself. Sharp, stubborn, and entirely unwilling to be impressed by money, she holds her ground in a way that makes the Grumpy-Sunshine Dynamic feel genuinely earned. Declan, guarded and driven, thaws slowly, and watching that happen from two perspectives is where the book does its best work. The story is told through Multiple POV, so readers get both the inner denial and the growing warmth at the same time.
Painter's real gift is banter, and this book has it in abundance. The Witty Banter & Sharp Dialogue between Abi and Declan builds its own internal language - running jokes and small callbacks that accumulate into something that feels genuinely intimate by the time the Slow-burn Romance starts to tip its hand. The comedy never undercuts the emotion; if anything, the laughs make the quieter moments land harder. This is Wish Fulfilment done with self-awareness, drawing on Cinderella-adjacent energy without pretending it doesn't know exactly what it's doing.
For readers who want a romance that moves quickly, makes them laugh out loud, and still delivers on the emotional payoff, this is a confident, crowd-pleasing read. The Opposites Attract and Hidden Identity mechanics are well-worn, but Painter handles them with enough specificity - and enough genuine feeling between two fully realised characters - to make the whole thing feel fresh.
