Jade War

by Fonda Lee

Book 2 of the The Green Bone Saga series

4.3 / 5

Jade War by Fonda Lee continues the Green Bone Saga as foreign powers threaten Kekon and No Peak faces betrayals. This sequel expands scope whilst deepening character arcs, exploring morally complex choices, escalating clan conflict, and power's accumulating costs.

Jade War is Fonda Lee's 2019 second installment in the Green Bone Saga, winning the World Fantasy Award and Locus Award whilst expanding the series' scope beyond Kekon's shores to explore how foreign powers seek to exploit or control jade, threatening the island nation's sovereignty and forcing the Kaul family to make increasingly morally complex choices to protect No Peak clan. Following the escalating rivalry between No Peak and Mountain clan established in Jade City, the novel deepens character development, raises personal and political stakes, and explores how the costs of power - physical, psychological, and moral - accumulate across individuals and families caught in cycles of violence and loyalty.

The novel picks up with the Kaul family and No Peak clan navigating the aftermath of events from Jade City whilst facing new threats on multiple fronts. The Mountain clan continues seeking advantage, the rivalry between clans intensifying as both pursue strategies to weaken their opponent whilst maintaining enough strength to protect against external dangers. But the clan warfare now operates within larger context of foreign interference that threatens Kekon's independence and jade monopoly.

Lee expands the worldbuilding beyond Kekon to show how other nations - particularly Espenia and Ygutan - pursue their own interests regarding jade. Foreign powers seek jade for military applications, develop synthetic alternatives to break Kekon's monopoly, and interfere in clan politics to gain leverage. The novel explores how small nations navigate when larger powers treat them as resources to exploit rather than sovereign equals, whilst showing how Kekon's internal divisions make it vulnerable to external manipulation.

The Kaul siblings face their own developments as responsibilities and losses shape them. Hilo, now serving as Pillar after events from the first book, must balance the violence that makes him effective warrior with the political skills leadership requires. Shae has committed to No Peak despite her earlier desire to escape clan life, taking on roles requiring her to navigate foreign powers whilst protecting Kekon's interests. Anden continues his training and growth, facing choices about what kind of Green Bone he will become and what he owes his family versus himself.

Lee doesn't shy from showing power's costs - the physical toll jade takes on bodies, the psychological damage from violence and loss, the moral compromises required to protect clan and family, and how choosing the violent path creates cycles that trap even those who recognize the pattern. Characters make choices that feel necessary for survival or protection but carry consequences that will echo into the final book.

Supporting characters receive development as Lee shows how clan warfare affects not just leaders but warriors, advisors, family members, and those whose lives depend on No Peak's continued strength. The novel explores different perspectives on loyalty, duty, and the question of whether some prices are too high even for family.

Themes of foreign interference and sovereignty, escalating violence and revenge cycles, leadership's burdens, moral compromises for survival, family loyalty tested, tradition under threat from modernization, and whether honor can survive pragmatic necessities run throughout.

The ending provides resolution whilst advancing character arcs and conflicts toward the trilogy's conclusion, with losses and choices that will shape the final installment.
