Jade City by Fonda Lee follows the Kaul family of No Peak clan in jade-wielding Kekon. This award-winning debut blends Asian-inspired fantasy, crime family dynamics, martial arts magic, and clan warfare through morally complex characters navigating loyalty and power.
Jade City is Fonda Lee's 2017 debut launching the Green Bone Saga, winning the World Fantasy Award and establishing Lee as a major fantasy voice through her creation of Kekon - an island nation where jade grants superhuman abilities to trained warriors who form powerful clans controlling the economy, politics, and criminal underworld. Following the Kaul family of the No Peak clan as they navigate escalating rivalry with the Mountain clan, foreign interference, and internal family tensions, the novel blends wuxia martial arts traditions with Godfather-style organized crime drama whilst exploring themes of family loyalty, honor, tradition, and the costs of power in a world resembling mid-20th-century East Asia.
The novel is set on Kekon, where jade - found only on the island - grants enhanced strength, speed, perception, and other abilities to Green Bone warriors trained to channel its power. But jade is addictive; wearing too much causes the Itches, eventual madness, and death. This creates natural limits whilst ensuring that those who can safely wield jade form an elite warrior class controlling Kekon through clan structures operating like organized crime families with territories, businesses, tribute systems, and codes of honor governing their operations.
The No Peak and Mountain clans dominate Kekon, their rivalry rooted in history but intensifying as both seek advantage whilst foreign powers - particularly the Espenians, whose country once occupied Kekon - develop interest in jade for military applications. Lee introduces the conflict through multiple perspectives showing how clan warfare operates through political maneuvering, economic competition, and street-level violence rather than battlefield armies.
The Kaul family provides the emotional core. Lan Kaul serves as Pillar (clan leader), embodying traditional Green Bone values of honor, duty, and measured response to threats. His younger brother Hilo is the Horn (military leader), volatile and fiercely loyal, whose willingness to use violence makes him both effective enforcer and potential liability. Their sister Shae abandoned the clan years ago, removing her jade to pursue foreign education and escape the violence, but returns when family needs her, bringing outside perspective that challenges No Peak's traditional ways.
Lee develops supporting characters whose relationships with the Kauls and their own positions within No Peak create the texture of clan life - Anden, the Kauls' cousin training to become Green Bone; Doru, Lan's wife navigating the role of Pillar's partner; Kehn, Hilo's lover whose position as weatherman (clan advisor) requires balancing loyalty with honest counsel; and various warriors, advisors, and business operators whose lives depend on No Peak's success.
The Mountain clan, led by the ambitious Ayt Mada, represents different vision for Kekon's future - more willing to embrace foreign influences and modernization, less bound by traditional honor codes. The rivalry between clans drives the plot whilst exploring larger questions about tradition adapting to change, whether honor codes can survive economic and political pressures, and what Kekon risks by either isolating itself or opening to foreign influence.
Themes of family loyalty and its costs, honor versus pragmatism, tradition facing modernization, power and its corruption, what you owe your family, and violence perpetuating revenge cycles run throughout.
The ending provides resolution whilst setting up the trilogy's continuation as conflicts established here will echo across decades.
