Juniper & Thorn by Ava Reid reimagines a dark Grimm fairy tale in Imperial Russia-inspired fantasy. This standalone delivers gothic atmosphere, captivity, monstrous father, slow burn romance, and Reid's most intense literary prose exploring control and agency.

About the book

Juniper & Thorn is Ava Reid's 2022 standalone fantasy novel reimagining the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "The Juniper Tree" in a setting inspired by Imperial Russia, delivering Reid's darkest and most atmospherically intense work through the story of Marlinchen - a young woman with healing magic whose entire existence has been controlled by her monstrous father, a powerful wizard who keeps his daughters isolated, dependent, and afraid whilst feeding on the magic they produce. When a ballet dancer arrives in their decaying city and disrupts the carefully maintained world Marlinchen's father has constructed, the novel explores the complicated psychology of those raised under oppressive control, the difficulty of recognizing abuse when it's the only reality you've known, and what agency looks like when someone has spent their entire life without it.

Marlinchen and her sisters live in a crumbling house in a city where the old magic is dying, their father Zmiy a wizard whose power comes at costs he ensures his daughters pay rather than himself. Marlinchen's healing magic - the ability to consume others' pain and illness - provides the framework for exploring how her father has normalized exploitation, making her feel that serving his needs is love rather than control. Reid portrays this dynamic with psychological precision, creating a protagonist whose worldview has been so thoroughly shaped by her abuser that recognizing her situation requires the kind of external disruption the ballet dancer provides.

The Imperial Russia-inspired setting creates atmosphere central to the novel's darkness - the dying city with its fading magic, the ballet company bringing outside beauty into Marlinchen's restricted world, and the fairy tale elements that Reid integrates into the world rather than applying as surface decoration. The Brothers Grimm source material provides structure whilst Reid transforms it, making the story specifically about female captivity, the psychology of control, and what survives when someone has been systematically diminished.

The romance develops through Marlinchen's encounters with the ballet dancer, whose world - physical, artistic, alive with movement - contrasts sharply with her constrained existence. Reid builds the connection carefully, ensuring the romantic element operates within the context of a protagonist whose understanding of relationships has been distorted by her upbringing, making the development feel psychologically honest rather than straightforwardly romantic.

The fairy tale horror elements provide genuine darkness - this is Reid's most intense work, with the monstrous father and the magic system's requirements creating situations that go beyond dark romantic fantasy into territory requiring content awareness. Readers who found The Wolf and the Woodsman emotionally demanding should approach Juniper & Thorn knowing it operates at higher intensity.

Reid's prose reaches its most literary in this novel, with imagery drawn from Russian folklore, fairy tale tradition, and the physical language of ballet creating a reading experience that prioritizes atmosphere and psychological depth.

Themes of captivity and the psychology of control, recognizing abuse when it's been normalized, agency discovered rather than given, beauty existing within suffering, and what it costs to leave everything you've known run throughout.
