The Sun Eater is a sweeping mix of epic science fiction and space opera, blending political intrigue, philosophical depth, and high-stakes adventure. Set thousands of years in the future in a sprawling interstellar empire, the saga is told as the memoir of Hadrian Marlowe - scholar, soldier, and reluctant hero - who claims to have ended a war with the alien Cielcin and earned the infamous title "Sun Eater" for destroying a star and killing four billion humans. Ruocchio was influenced by classical literature and history, as well as authors like Frank Herbert and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Ruocchio's writing in his first novel, Empire of Silence, was described as "promising and ambitious" by Locus, while SFFWorld's Rob Bedford compared it to Dune, The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe, and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, stating "this just might be the most impressive SFF debut novel of 2018." The novel garnered the 2019 Manly Wade Wellman Award. James S.A. Corey praised the series as "epic science fiction at its most genuinely epic," while Library Journal gave it a starred review calling it "a must for fans of Pierce Brown and Patrick Rothfuss."

Publishers Weekly described Ruocchio's writing in Demon in White as having "seamless worldbuilding, thought-provoking science, and heart-pounding battles." Book Reporter stated "no one is delivering better science fiction than Christopher Ruocchio." The series spans seven main novels plus novellas and short story collections, following Hadrian across nearly two centuries as he evolves from failed aristocrat to legendary warrior to fugitive seeking redemption.

In 2025, following the completion of the Sun Eater series, Ruocchio announced The Doomsong Saga, a Mediterranean-inspired fantasy epic set in a Bronze Age–influenced world. Its first installment, The Godstained House, is scheduled for release in 2027. He is married and lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. His books have been translated into five languages, establishing him as one of science fiction's most promising voices for readers seeking space opera that combines classical influences with philosophical depth.
