Book 1 of the Magical Fusion series

The Fusionist

A logger with an enchanted axe. A false accusation. A magical academy he never wanted to attend. Jonathan Brooks launches the Magical Fusion series with The Fusionist - where crafting meets destiny in this LitRPG fantasy adventure.

The Fusionist is the opening book in Jonathan Brooks' Magical Fusion series - an eight-book LitRPG fantasy saga that introduces readers to Larek Holsten, a seven-foot-tall logger whose simple life is upended by circumstance, prejudice, and the discovery of extraordinary magical potential he never knew he possessed.

Larek lives on the edge of the Rushwood Forest in the Kingdom of Androthe, where his unusual height makes him the subject of suspicion and hostility from the Kingdom's shorter residents. Despite this, he's found contentment in his work. He's a skilled logger whose best friend is his trusty axe - a tool enhanced by a powerful Fusion that makes it sharper and more durable than any ordinary blade. Together, Larek and his axe are a formidable team, capable of felling the fast-growing magical trees of the Rushwood faster than anyone else in his community.

But one trip to the local village changes everything. A chance encounter with the headman's daughter results in an unfortunate injury, and rather than telling the truth, she lies about what happened. Larek is blamed, falsely accused, and forcibly taken from his family and the only home he has ever known. What follows is a journey that will transform him from a simple woodsman into something he never imagined.

During his transport, those escorting Larek discover something unexpected: he possesses dormant magical potential. In a Kingdom threatened by Scissions - dangerous portals that release waves of monsters - every mage is valuable, and Larek is conscripted into Crystalview Academy to train as a magic user whether he wants to or not.

At the academy, Larek's challenges multiply. His height continues to mark him as different, and his introverted nature makes navigating social dynamics difficult. Worse still, he discovers a natural talent for Fusion crafting - a sophisticated form of magical enhancement that goes far beyond simple enchantment. Fusions imbue objects with extraordinary properties, and Larek's intuitive grasp of this rare skill quickly sets him apart from other students.

However, his talent also paints a target on his back. Dean Wilburt, the academy's leader, harbours a deep-seated hatred for Fusionists, and Larek's presence becomes a source of constant friction. Forced to keep his abilities partially hidden whilst still developing them, Larek must balance learning to survive in a hostile academic environment with mastering a craft that could one day save lives - or make him powerful enemies.

Jonathan Brooks, author of the acclaimed Earthen Contenders series, brings his signature attention to detail to The Fusionist. The magic system is thoroughly developed, with clear rules and costs that ground the fantastical elements in logic. Readers who enjoy magical academy stories, crafting / enchanting systems, and weak to strong protagonist arcs will find much to appreciate here. The book establishes Larek as an underdog hero whose greatest strength isn't raw power but creativity, determination, and an unexpected gift for magical craftsmanship.

The Fusionist sets the stage for an expansive series whilst delivering a complete, satisfying story in its own right. For fans of progression fantasy and LitRPG / GameLit who enjoy watching characters grow from humble beginnings, this is an excellent entry point into Jonathan Brooks' world of Fusion magic and portal defence.
