The Fiancé Dilemma by Elena Armas is Armas's 2024 second instalment in the Green Oak series, returning readers to the warmly chaotic world of Green Oak, North Carolina, first established in The Long Game. Josie Moore has a reputation in town - not just as the mayor-in-spirit and coffee shop owner, but as a woman who has left four separate men at the altar. Four engagements, zero weddings. When her newly discovered, high-profile father announces his retirement via a glossy magazine piece about the family, Josie's colourful romantic history suddenly becomes a very public problem.
Into this mess stumbles Matthew Flanagan - her half-sister's best friend, freshly fired, his car stuck in the mud outside Green Oak after a wrong turn. He's barely set foot in town when a fake dating situation spirals into a full-blown fake engagement, Josie having introduced him as her fiancé in a moment of sheer panic. What follows is a forced proximity arrangement governed by rules neither of them is particularly good at keeping. The rest of Green Oak, delighted by the idea that the fifth time might finally be the charm, is more than happy to believe every word of it.
Armas writes slow-burn romance with real patience. Matthew is the kind of hero who falls first and harder, quietly and persistently, and the tension between two people who are very clearly not fooling anyone - except perhaps themselves - drives the contemporary romance forward with both warmth and heat. Josie's instinct to panic, deflect, and accidentally make everything worse gives the novel its comedic engine, while her complicated feelings around family, belonging, and a history of love that never quite stuck give it genuine emotional weight. This is Emotional Vulnerability played for both laughs and sincerity in equal measure.
The Small Town Romance setting does a lot of work here. Green Oak isn't just a backdrop - it's a community with opinions, investment, and a talent for cheerful interference. Readers who met these characters in The Long Game will find welcome familiar faces woven throughout. Those coming fresh to the series will find enough grounding to follow Josie's story on its own terms, though the first book adds meaningful context. The Found Family thread - Josie navigating a father who was absent for most of her life and a half-sister whose best friend is now supposedly her fiancé - gives the story its more tender undercurrents.
Funny, genuinely romantic, and built on the Opposites Attract and Grumpy-Sunshine Dynamic that Armas handles with considerable skill, The Fiancé Dilemma earned a starred review from Publishers Weekly and cemented Matthew Flanagan as one of the author's most beloved heroes. For readers who want their Heat / Spice alongside real emotional stakes and a romance that earns its ending, this delivers.
