Dungeon World Tropes
Orphaned and alone. Fred discovers an impossible truth: he's a dungeon core/human hybrid. Jonathan Brooks launches the Dungeon World series with revenge, discovery, and the awakening of powers that could save - or doom - humanity. Book 1.
Dungeon World is the opening book in Jonathan Brooks' five-book dungeon core series, introducing readers to a unique world where dungeons and their Dungeon Cores sit at the top of the food chain. Set on a planet five times larger than Earth, this LitRPG / GameLit novel establishes a fascinating premise: millions of dungeons inhabit the world, utilizing humans as a source of Mana to facilitate their growth, whilst humans delve into dungeons to acquire Essence that allows them to develop and enhance themselves. It's a symbiotic relationship that has lasted for centuries and brought about a measure of peace between two species that need each other to thrive.
The story follows Fredwynklemossering (Fred for short), a young man living in the remote northern wilds where humans and dungeons rarely venture. His isolated life with his parents comes to a brutal end when they are suddenly and unexpectedly murdered. Left completely alone - without friends, family, supplies, or even much knowledge of the wider world beyond his home - Fred embarks on a desperate journey driven by grief and the burning need for answers. Who targeted his parents? What killed them? And most importantly, upon whom must he enact his revenge?
Fred's quest for vengeance takes an unexpected turn when he discovers something about himself that should be impossible. His parents had told him from the moment he was born that it couldn't be true, yet the evidence becomes undeniable: Fred is a Dungeon Core/Human hybrid. This revelation fundamentally changes everything. Fred must now grapple with abilities and instincts he never knew he possessed, learning to control powers that blur the line between human and dungeon core whilst navigating a world that has no category for something like him.
As Fred begins to understand his unique nature, his objectives shift. The personal vendetta that drove him from his home begins to pale in comparison to larger threats he uncovers. The symbiotic relationship between dungeons and humans that has maintained peace for so long shows signs of danger, and Fred's hybrid status gives him insight that no one else possesses. The question becomes whether he can learn to control his newly awakened dungeon core abilities before they consume him - and whether he can successfully straddle the line between the human and Dungeon Core worlds before it's too late.
Jonathan Brooks, author of Magical Fusion and Earthen Contenders, brings his signature attention to LitRPG mechanics to the dungeon core genre. The book features detailed statistics and levelling systems, dungeon construction mechanics, and the strategic gameplay that fans of Brooks' work have come to expect. What makes Dungeon World stand out is its exploration of what it means to be caught between two worlds - to have the body of a human but the instincts and powers of a dungeon core.
For readers who enjoy progression fantasy, dungeon builder mechanics, and protagonists who must navigate conflicting identities, Dungeon World offers a compelling start to a completed series. The book balances revenge-driven action with character development as Fred learns what his hybrid nature truly means - both for himself and for the future of all humans. This is a story about power, identity, and the realisation that some responsibilities are larger than personal vengeance.
