Black Heart
The Curse Workers #3
Holly Black
At its core, Power & Control is about the intoxicating — and often dangerous — dynamic that forms when one character holds significant authority over another. That authority might be political, financial, social, or simply physical. What matters is the charge it creates: the tension, the push and pull, the question of who really holds the upper hand when feelings start to complicate the arrangement.
Readers are drawn to this trope precisely because it walks a knife's edge. There's something deeply compelling about watching characters negotiate power in real time, especially when desire, trust, and vulnerability enter the equation. It's uncomfortable in the best possible way.
The hallmarks of Power & Control stories are asymmetry and awareness. Both characters know the imbalance exists. Sometimes one resents it; sometimes one exploits it; sometimes both are quietly undone by it. The tension comes not just from external conflict but from the internal reckoning each character faces — what does it mean to want someone who controls your circumstances, or to care for someone you have power over?
Control can manifest in countless forms. A ruthless CEO and his new employee. A fae lord and his mortal captive. A king negotiating a political marriage with someone who refuses to be managed. What unites them is that the question of agency — who has it, who wants it, who surrenders it willingly — sits at the heart of the story.
In dark romance, this trope tends to be pushed to its most extreme expression. Captivity, obsession, and morally compromised heroes are par for the course, and readers who come to these books know they're signing up for something that deliberately courts discomfort. The fantasy of control is examined rather than sanitised.
Fantasy and paranormal romance offer a slightly different flavour, often using supernatural hierarchies — alphas, immortals, rulers of entire realms — to build the power gap into the world's architecture itself. Here, the imbalance feels almost cosmological, which raises the emotional stakes considerably when a character chooses to defy it.
Contemporary romance tends to ground the dynamic in recognisable structures: the workplace, wealth disparity, or social standing. The tension is perhaps more mundane on the surface, but no less charged for it. A well-written boss-employee story can carry just as much heat as any paranormal court intrigue.
There's a reason this trope fills shelves across multiple genres and generates some of the most passionate reader communities around. It asks questions that don't have easy answers: Can equals be made from an unequal beginning? Is control ever truly relinquished, or just redirected? When does protection become possession?
Done well, Power & Control isn't about glorifying dominance — it's about interrogating it. The best books in this space let characters surprise you, let the power shift in unexpected directions, and leave you thinking long after the final page. If you want a story that keeps you slightly on edge from beginning to end, this is the trope for you.
